5 Stars Biltham Hall

What a moving and emotionally powerful story! Set in post-war Britain, this book sounds like a beautiful yet heartbreaking exploration of forbidden love, class prejudice, and the impossible choices people faced in a society ruled by rigid expectations. My heart goes out to James and Jack, who must hide their love in a world that refuses to accept them. The added themes of grief, family duty, and the treatment of vulnerable people make this story feel even more poignant. I love the promise of hope shining through the sadness, and I can imagine this being a deeply affecting read that stays with you long after the final page.

3 Stars Okay. Ish.

A heartwarming story that captures the audience, but I feel it spends too much time focusing on the history of 1945.

I feel the post-war setting in a bombed and battered Britain with its wide class divides and restrictive social mores is fundamental to the story. - PCN

5 Stars Love Behind the Walls of Tradition
Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2026
The post-war setting adds so much emotional depth to this story of love, duty, and social expectations. James’s struggle between his family’s demands and his feelings for Jack creates a compelling tension, while the crumbling estate reflects a society beginning to change. I also appreciate the inclusion of his young autistic cousin’s situation, which adds another difficult layer to the story. A moving historical romance about courage, secrecy, and hope in a world that refuses to make love easy.

4 Stars Lovely read

Very lovely read! I enjoyed the writing and enjoyed that they would add a few pictures, though it sort of felt like i was reading a textbook whenever a picture was present. That did not take away from the lovely writing though.

4 Stars Quietly Radical Love Story Set in the Long Shadow of the War
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2026
Biltham Hall by Patrick C. Notchtree is an MM historical romance set in mid-1940s England, following James, the new Lord Biltham, as he returns from the Navy to restore his crumbling estate and finds himself drawn into an unexpected and tender relationship with Albert, a young man whose traumatic past has left him profoundly different from anyone James has ever met. Notchtree writes with patience and warmth, taking real time with the textures of postwar rural England: the estate management, the German prisoner workers on the home farm, the class dynamics of the village, and the quiet impossibility of loving another man in an era when doing so was a criminal act. The relationship between James and Albert develops with genuine delicacy, particularly in the scenes where James slowly learns how to understand Albert’s way of being in the world, and the emotional payoff of those moments is considerable. At 475 pages this is an unhurried, immersive read that rewards those who settle into its rhythms, recommended for readers who love quiet historical fiction with real humanity at its centre.

Perhaps this was written from memory as the reader seems to have confused some of the characters. - PCN
